Louisiana Truck Stops Feature Virtual Casino Machines

December 14th, 2007 by admin

In addition to seaside casino resort complexes in the Gulf Coast and other areas, Louisiana also has a booming virtual casino business at restaurants, bars, and truck stops throughout the state.

Indeed, more than 150 Louisiana truck stops offer virtual casino machines for poker and other games. Truck stops are allowed to have from 35 to 50 machines, based on a variety of factors including their customer flow and fuel sales. Bars and restaurants, in contrast, are allowed up to three virtual casino machines.

Although business is undoubtedly booming, the truck stop virtual casino industry is not without its controversies.

Truck stops that seek to add virtual casino machines must subject themselves to a background check and an investigation by the Louisiana State Police and Attorney General’s office. The same is the case for any other business that wants to add a machine.

However, the truck stops must take in additional step in the virtual casino machine licensing process: they must make an appearance before the Louisiana Gaming Control Board monthly meeting, at which the authorities describe their “suitability.”

Alton Ashey, an advocate for the truck stop virtual casino machine industry called the additional review “theatrics.” He said that the month-long delay until the board approves projects simply unnecessarily deprives the businesses and state and local governments of revenue.
